Extra-Curricular
Outside the classroom.
Extra-curricular activities are diverse, aiming to meet all students’ needs. Each pupil at Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby can choose from any number of activities with some taking part in over ten through the school year.
Participation in these activities helps pupils to broaden their outlook on life and meet students from other classes. Many of the activities are open to all year groups and so provide opportunities to work with older, more experienced pupils.
It’s an expectation that every pupil engages in at least one extra-curricular activity during the school year. Pupils’ participation is registered and monitored by a member of the senior leadership team. Last year 83% of students took part in at least one activity; our school target is 100%.
Rugby
Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby has a strong rugby history in the local and wider community of Telford and Shropshire. With eight committed rugby coaches and seven playing pitches, we’re able to consistently develop our students to the highest standards both on and off the pitch.
The main aim of Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby Rugby is to provide students with excellent rugby opportunities; seeking to develop personal and team skills, provide discipline and inspire hard work and endeavour whilst offering new horizons to show our young people that there are genuine careers and life opportunities when their formal education finishes.
We play fixtures between September and March; these fixtures include 15-a-side and sevens games. We’re unique in being the only state school in Shropshire to offer a highly competitive Saturday school fixture list. Last season, we played 15 weekend fixtures against some of the strongest independent schools in the North Midlands.
Music
Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby music department has enjoyed a very successful music tradition, for over 50 years and has ensured that the academy has become one of the country’s leading education establishments for musical opportunity for its students, with a high reputation within the youth music world.
The music department is one of the very few left in the country, which still provides heavily subsidised instrumental & vocal lessons and operates a Saturday morning music college during term time, where many lessons and rehearsals take place. The department has over ten various ensembles, some of which regularly perform on local, national & international stages. Both the Showband (wind band) and Senior Jazz Band from Abraham Darby have participated successfully in the National Concert Band Festival and National Festival of Music for Youth over the past 25 years.
